34. Speech Breakdown: TED Talk by Simon Sinek “Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe”

We’re listening to another TED Talk on The Presentation Boss Podcast today! Simon Sinek has the third most watched TED Talk of all time, is seen as a leader in both leadership psychology and one of the world’s most recognisable speakers. We like his style and reckon most folks would like him too. Today we listen to one of his talks and discuss exactly what makes it great.

There is lots to witness here in neat presentation skills including minimalism storytelling, controlled pacing and effective visual aids. But of course, there are a few moments that niggle us enough to make comment about what we can learn. Listen in as Kate and Thomas talk more about the talk, more than Sinek talks.

What You’ll Learn
• The effectiveness of starting a presentation with the opening scene from a story

• How an unusually slow pace can enable so much more room for contrast

• A hack for overcoming objections and making sure your audience is persuaded

• How and why Simon Sinek uses a flipchart for his visual models

• Using physical props to build interest and anticipation

• How to not distract yourself with your own props

• Why thinking of a tree can help you to bring in supporting material

• The single most powerful imagery to put in your audience’s mind

• How to avoid excluding people from your presentation through use of examples

• Anchoring abstract concepts to common thoughts and ideas.
